The 2009 school year begins in Zambia in January with three Beth's Girls attending tertiary schools. Dianah Masumbah matriculates for a two-year program to become a teacher at Solwezi College of Education in the NW Province. Sandra Kamulosu begins a one-year Secretarial and Office Management course at Solwezi Trades Training Institute. Angela Kasongo will study Food Production for one year at the Hotel & Tourism Training Institute Trust in Lusaka. Classes begin next week. Congratulations to all of you who have helped to make this happen. These responsible young women have been EBZEF scholarship recipients through secondary school and are preparing for careers they could not have dreamed of before your support made them possible. All three girls have stated a clear desire to "give back" to the village. They are extremely excited about their programs and proud to be significant role models for younger Beth's Girls.

EBZEF Supports Zambia Girl Child Education Campaign

January 5, 2009

The Zambian Ministry of Education report for 2008 shows that two provinces, including the NW, have had all girls who sat for Grade 7 examinations selected into secondary school. As EBZEF Board member Fordson Kafweku assures us, "EBZEF is surely contributing to the excellent results girls in the NWP are scoring. The encouragement that the secondary girls are giving to the community is spreading. Beth's Girls are models in Lumwana West, Mwinilunga, and the Northwest Province! So, get encouraged!" EBZEF currently funds all 8th grade girls from the village who wish to pursue their education beyond primary school. You are helping us to affect positively the education statistics in Zambia at large.

EBZEF Donations Grow

December 30, 2009

Thank you to everyone who donated to support EBZEF in 2008. In a depressed economy, EBZEF was amazed to see year-end donations increase so generously. Your support and encouragement make all things possible for Beth's Girls and for the village of Lumwana West. Beth's Girls now view themselves differently and have dreams of a new future, the village now views the education of the girl child as important, and the girls have become role models in the region and beyond.

Mary is a publishing scholar in her field and highly successful in her work at Penn State.

Help! EBZEF Success Needs Support

April 14, 2007

Current figures indicate that EBZEF is supporting a total of 83 girls with scholarships for 2007. In 2006, the number was 66. In 2005 it was 44. There are currently 41 girls in 8th grade (as opposed to 26 in 2006). In addition, 6 girls have passed their exams into 10th grade (as opposed to 5 in 2006). We also have two high school graduates for the first time this year. Prudence Masanyinga was the first to graduate three years ago.

The surge in numbers may be due to our visit in August, to having Prudence with us as a role model, and to the tutoring program instituted by EBZEF last year. We are pleased by the success of the Beth's Girls program. However, now we need to fund raise on a larger scale to be sure we do not have to turn girls away. If you have ideas for raising such funds, please let us know?
