EBZEF Memorial Library and Learning Center

The Memorial Library and Learning Center was a Peace Corps Partnership Program with the Elizabeth Bowers Zambia Education Fund begun at the initiative of Peace Corps Volunteer Robert Wilder 2006 and continued by PCV Jessica Hillsley through 2008. The community of Lumwana West supplied materials and constructed the building with their own hands.

The building is 220 square meters in size and holds up to 50 people at a time. It is lighted by solar panels which also provide power for resident laptop computers, printers, and other small electrical devices. As a literacy project for Beth’s Girls and for the village of Lumwana West and surrounding area, the Library houses textbooks as well as a general library collection of 18,000-20,000 volumes. It includes a section of Zambian/African authors, a Children’s Corner, a Teacher’s Section, plus daily Zambian newspapers.

Walk with us through this photo gallery to see the project, from initial sketches to a completed, electrified, and fully stocked library and learning center.
